Interior detailing is more than a vacuum. Here's what a professional interior clean actually does — and why the difference matters for your car's air quality, smell, and resale value.
Most people clean their car's exterior far more regularly than the interior. The interior is where you spend all your time, and yet it accumulates months of coffee spills, skin oils, bacteria in the air vents, and grit ground into carpet fibres before it gets any attention. Here's what a proper interior detail involves.
Vacuuming A proper vacuum means removing the seats and floor mats, getting into every seam, the gaps between seats and centre console, the boot, and under the seats. A quick run-over with a standard vacuum doesn't count as a detail.
Steam cleaning Steam is the most effective interior cleaning method for several reasons. At 150°C+, it kills bacteria and dust mites without chemicals. It lifts ground-in grime from carpet fibres without saturating them. It cleans fabric seats, plastic trim, and air vents simultaneously. It eliminates odours at the source rather than masking them.
For cars with child seats, food spills, pet hair, or cigarette odour — steam cleaning is the only method that genuinely addresses the contamination rather than covering it.
Leather care Leather requires a two-step process: cleaning with a leather-safe cleaner to remove oils and surface grime, then conditioning with a leather conditioner to replace the natural oils that cleaning strips out. Skip the conditioning and leather dries, cracks over time, and loses its suppleness. This is the most commonly skipped step in budget interior cleans.
Glass (interior) Interior glass accumulates an oily film from off-gassing plastics and breathing — the same film that creates that haze on the inside of your windscreen that's almost impossible to clean with a regular cloth. A proper glass cleaner applied with a microfibre in a cross-hatch pattern removes it.
Trim and plastics Dashboard, door cards, centre console, and plastic trim are cleaned and treated with a UV protectant that prevents the fading and cracking caused by Melbourne's sun through the windows.
Air vents Often ignored. A steam lance or detail brush gets into each vent slat, removing the dust that recirculates through your cabin air system every time you turn on the fan.
Resale value When you sell a car, the interior condition is one of the first things a buyer assesses. A clean, odour-free interior with well-maintained leather reads as a well-maintained car. Stained seats and a stale smell can reduce a private sale price by thousands.
Air quality Dust mites, mould spores, and bacteria accumulate in carpets and seats over time. If you're driving with children or anyone with allergies or asthma, the interior air quality of a car that hasn't been steam cleaned in years is genuinely poor.
Leather longevity Properly conditioned leather lasts the life of the car. Dry, cracked leather — the result of never conditioning — is expensive to repair or replace.
For a daily driver in Melbourne: a full interior detail every 3–6 months is a reasonable cadence. If you have young children, a dog, or eat in your car regularly, every 2–3 months. Between full details, a vacuum and quick wipe-down monthly keeps the interior from deteriorating between professional cleans.
Pristine Detailers offers interior detail as a standalone service or as part of a full detail package. We come to your location across Melbourne — no drop-off required.
