Ceramic Coating in South East Melbourne: Cost, Process, and What to Expect

Ceramic coating in Melbourne's south east — what it actually costs, how the process works, and why mobile application is the better choice for most cars.

Ceramic Coating in South East Melbourne: Cost, Process, and What to Expect

If you're looking for ceramic coating in south east Melbourne — whether you're in Clyde North, Berwick, Dandenong, Frankston, Mornington, or anywhere across the peninsula — here's what the process actually involves, what it costs, and why it's worth doing right.

What Ceramic Coating Actually Is

A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer — usually SiO2 (silicon dioxide) based — that's applied to your car's exterior painted surfaces. When it cures, it forms a semi-permanent bond with the clear coat. It doesn't sit on top like wax. It becomes part of the surface.

The result is a hard, hydrophobic layer that: - Repels water — water beads and sheets off the surface rather than sitting on it - Blocks UV — significantly reduces UV-induced paint fade and oxidation - Resists contamination — bird droppings, tree sap, and brake dust are easier to remove and cause less damage - Adds gloss — a properly applied ceramic coating deepens the paint's reflectivity noticeably

What it doesn't do: it won't prevent stone chips (that's PPF), and it won't correct existing paint defects — those need to be addressed before application.

The Process: What Happens on the Day

Step 1 — Paint decontamination Before a coating goes on, the paint needs to be completely clean at the microscopic level. This means a full wash, iron fallout removal (which dissolves bonded brake dust particles), and a clay bar treatment to strip anything the iron remover didn't catch.

Step 2 — Paint correction (if needed) If the paint has swirl marks, light scratches, or water spots, they need to be corrected before coating. A ceramic coating locks in whatever is under it — apply it over defects and those defects are sealed in permanently. Most cars need at least a one-stage polish.

Step 3 — Panel wipe The paint is wiped down with an isopropyl alcohol solution to remove any polish oils and ensure the surface is completely bare for bonding.

Step 4 — Coating application The coating is applied panel by panel using an applicator block. It flashes (becomes tacky) and is then carefully levelled off with a high-quality microfibre. This requires working in controlled lighting to see any high spots or missed areas.

Step 5 — Cure time Most consumer-grade coatings are touch-dry in 1–2 hours. Full cure takes 14–28 days depending on the product and temperature. During this window, the car shouldn't get wet.

What Does Ceramic Coating Cost in South East Melbourne?

Pricing depends on the size of the vehicle, the condition of the paint (how much correction is needed), and the coating product tier:

  • Entry-level coating (1–2 year durability, minimal correction): $600–$900
  • Mid-range coating (3–5 year durability, one-stage correction included): $1,200–$1,800
  • Premium coating (7+ year durability, multi-stage correction, full paint enhancement): $2,500–$4,000+

These are Melbourne market rates. Prices from detailers significantly below this range usually mean less prep work — which is where the real value of a coating is determined. A coating applied to poorly prepped paint will peel, cloud, or cure unevenly.

Why Mobile Ceramic Coating Works

Ceramic coating doesn't require a paint booth — it requires controlled conditions and proper preparation. A skilled mobile technician with the right lighting, prep products, and coating system can achieve the same result at your property as a fixed studio. The advantage is you don't have to organise a car drop-off and collect.

Pristine Detailers applies ceramic coatings across Melbourne's south east. We assess the paint, advise on the correct correction level needed, and apply a coating suited to the car's use and your budget.
